American Sign Language Major (A.A.)
Purpose
The Associate of Arts in American Sign Language program equips students with foundational proficiency in ASL communication and interpretation, fostering linguistic and cultural competence in Deaf Studies. Through progressive coursework in ASL fluency, fingerspelling, and introductory interpreting, students develop essential skills for engaging with the Deaf community in various professional and service contexts. This program prepares graduates for entry-level positions in Deaf-related fields or further study in ASL and interpreting, contributing to accessibility and inclusivity. Emphasizing ethical communication and cross-cultural awareness, the program integrates a Christian worldview to support service-oriented engagement with the Deaf community.
Program Learning Outcomes
The student will be able to:
- Communicate in a linguistically and culturally appropriate way through the use of American Sign Language.
- Model various sociolinguistic elements, values, and concerns of the culturally Deaf.
