Language competency may be fullled with 12 hours of university level classes in the same language or documentation of ACTFL Advanced Low competency in a language. Language competency must be met prior to enrollment in DISS 987.

Students should take GICE 900 and GICE 901 within the first year of their program of study.

The Mentored Research and Specialized Study courses exist to allow students to research niche topics and develop expertise in specialized areas of Global and Intercultural Engagement. Students may petition to take additional GICE Electives or to substitute 900 level BITH, RLGN, APOL, CHHI, or THEO courses that would fit with the student’s area of specialization.

Students who successfully complete 27 hours of doctoral course study with a grade point average of 3.25 or higher in the courses of study for the Ph.D. in Global and Intercultural Engagement may be eligible to take comprehensive examinations along with their final courses in the program upon approval from the PhD director. Upon passing of the comprehensive project (GICE 992), the comprehensive examination (GICE 993),and all other course work, the student is admitted to doctoral candidacy and may proceed toward writing the dissertation (DISS 987- DISS 990) under the supervision of a faculty supervisor and two faculty readers (the dissertation committee). Students who do not successfully pass the comprehensive project and exam will be required to repeat the courses. Registration for the Comprehensive Project and Exam courses requires Program Director Approval.

Once students enter the dissertation phase of their degree, they are required to maintain continuous enrollment (Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters) until they complete all degree requirements. If they do not, they will break enrollment, and they will be required to apply for readmission if/when they wish to resume the pursuit of their degree. They will have to complete their degree under the Degree Completion Plan (DCP) in effect at the time of their readmission.

Once entering the writing phase of the dissertation, students must continually demonstrate progress toward their dissertation. Students who have made progress, but who have not completed the course requirements, may be required to repeat the course.

Graduation Requirements

  • Complete 57 hours
  • A maximum of 50% of a post-graduate and doctoral degree may be transferred if approved and allowable, including credit from an earned degree from Liberty University on the same academic level
  • 3.0 GPA
  • No grades lower than a B- may be applied to the degree
  • Degree must be completed within 7 years
  • Submission of Degree Completion Application must be completed within the last semester of a student’s anticipated graduation date
